CANADA FINISHES 4TH AT COPA AMERICA

La Celeste Wins Penalty Shootout 4-3

Canada Came From Behind But Fell Short in Bronze Medal Match

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Canada came close to winning a medal at the 2024 Copa America but ultimately fell short, losing 4-3 on penalty kicks to Uruguay in the third-place game at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday.

Canada had rallied from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the second half, but Luis Suarez equalized for Uruguay in the 79th minute to send the match to extra time. Neither team scored in extra time, so the match went to penalty kicks.

Canada missed its first two penalty kicks, while Uruguay made its first two. Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan made a save on Uruguay's third penalty, but Canada's next two attempts also went wide.

The loss was a disappointing end to the tournament for Canada, which had reached the semifinals for the first time in its history. However, the team can take pride in its performance, which included a 2-1 victory over Mexico in the quarterfinals.
