Lawrence Okolie Loses WBO Cruiserweight Title to Chris Billam-Smith
Billam-Smith Wins via Majority Decision in Upset
In a stunning upset, Chris Billam-Smith defeated Lawrence Okolie by majority decision to capture the WBO cruiserweight title on Saturday night at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth, England.
Billam-Smith was the underdog heading into the fight, but he fought his heart out and ultimately pulled off the victory. He knocked Okolie down twice in the fight and also earned a point deduction for holding.
Okolie was clearly disappointed with the result, but he praised Billam-Smith for his performance.
“Chris boxed a great fight,” Okolie said. “He was the better man tonight. I have no excuses.”
Billam-Smith was overjoyed with his victory and said it was a dream come true.
“I’m so happy,” Billam-Smith said. “I’ve worked so hard for this. It’s a dream come true.”
The victory is a major upset and it shakes up the cruiserweight division. Billam-Smith is now the WBO champion and Okolie will have to work his way back to the top.
